3eme Provisoire Cuirassiers

Fou un dels tres regiments de cuirassers francesos que van lluitar a Espanya i l’unic que ho va fer a Catalunya.
Tots tres regiments van acabar la guerra formant el 13è Regiment de Cuirassers.
Part del 2n regiment provisional va combatre a Bailén i va passar la major part de la guerra presoner a Cabrera. El 1r regiment, les restes del 2n i els 3r i 5è esquadrons de marxa van ser reorganitzats en el 13è (11/1808).
A continuacio, l’historial del 3r:

1808

Gerner: El regiment és fundat a Perpinyà (18/01) i enquadrat a la Brigada Bessières (germà del mariscal), Corps d’Observation des Pyrènes Orientales del General Duhesme amb 384 homes i 420 cavalls de les 4 primeres companyies dels cinquens esquadrons dels regiments 4rt, 6è, 7è i 8è. Entra a Barcelona el 29 de febrer de 1808.

Juny: Després de la revolta popular el regiment és dividit en 2 cossos i repartit entre la Brg. Schwartz que ha d’anar fins a Saragossa via Lleida i Manresa i la Brg. Chabran que ha d’arrivar fins a València ocupant Tarragona i Tortosa (04/06).
La Brig. Schwartz cau en l’emboscada del Bruc (06/06) deixant-hi alguns cuirassers morts.
La Brig. Chabran en arribar a Tarragona és avisada del perill i torna a Barcelona. En arribar a l’Arboç (10/06) un destacament del regiment suís de Wimpffen i el poble en armes els hi barren el pas. El regiment amb la resta de la brigada carrega i ocupa el poble. Els francesos incendien i saquegen la població.

Juliol: participa al 1r setge de Girona (20/06-22/07) i un destacament és rebutjat pels somatents a la Roca del Vallès (04/07).

Octubre-Desembre: 50 homes lluiten a San Boi (02/09), un petit destacament a San Cugat (12/10) i tot un esquadró a La Creu Coberta (5/12). El regiment a la Batalla de Molins de Rei (21-12).

1809

Enquadrat en el 7è Cos d’Exercit de Gouvion San-Cyr. Durant tot l’any combat als voltants de Barcelona sempre en petits destacaments: San Boi (17/08), Pallejà (26/09), Molins de Rei (13/12) i San Feliu (24/12) on pateix 45 baixes.

1810

Gener: EL MOMENT DE DESGRACIA: A Mollet del Vallès (21/01) el segon esquadró es derrotat pel Regiment de Cavalleria Numancia patint 112 baixes. Els presoners, amb el Coronel Guery inclòs són enviats a Lleida.

Abril: Quan Suchet conquereix Lleida, els cuirassers presoners son incorporats al 13è Regiment de Cuirassers. El 3r Provisional és desbandat.
El 13è combat sota les ordres de Suchet al baix Aragó, Catalunya i País Valencià fins al 1814 que torna a França.

It was one of the three French cuirassiers regiments in Spain and the only one who fought in Catalonia. All three finished the war forming the 13th Cuirassier Regiment.
Part of the second fought in Bailén and finished its days prisoner in Cabrera. The 1st Regiment, the remnants of the second and the 3rd and 5th squadrons de marche were reorganized into the 13th (11/1808)
Now follows the history of the 3rd:

1808

January: The regiment is founded in Perpignan (18/01). It forms part of the Brigade Bessières (brother of the marshal), Corps d’Observation des Pyrènes Orientales of General Duhesme. It has 384 men and 420 horses from the 4 first companies, of the 5th squadrons of each one the 4th, 6th, 7th and 8th regiments. It enters in Barcelona the 29th of February 1808.

June: After the popular revolt the regiment is Split between Schwartz Brigade with orders to go to Zaragoza occupying Manresa and Lleida and Chabran Brigade which must go to Valencia occupying Tarragona and Tortosa (04/06).
Schwartz is defeated at El Bruc (06/06) leaving several dead cuirassiers.
Chabran arrives at Tarragona where is warned the situation and asked to return to Barcelona. When reaches l’Arboç (10/06) a detachment of Wimpffen Swiss regiment and armed civilians try to defeat them. The regiment with the rest of the brigade charges and occupies the village. After this, l’Arboç is plundered and burned to ashes.

July: Takes part in the first siege of Girona (20/06-22/07) and a detachment is routed by the somatents in la Roca del Vallès (04/07).

October-December: 50 men fight at San Boi (02/09), a small detachment at San Cugat (12/10) and a whole squadron at La Creu Coberta (5/12). The regiment is at the battle of Molins de Rei (21-12).

1809

It is within the 7th Army Corps of Gouvion San-Cyr. The whole year fights near Barcelona always in small detachments: San Boi (17/08), Pallejà (26/09), Molins de Rei (13/12) and San Feliu (24/12) where it has 45 casualties.

1810

January: MOMENT OF DISGRACE: In Mollet del Vallès (21/01) the 2nd squadron is completely defeated by the Spanish cavalry regiment Numancia (112 casualties).The prisoners, mayor Guery included are sent to Lleida.

April: When Suchet conquers Lleida, the prisoners are incorporated merged into the 13th regiment. The 3rd Provisional is disbanded.
The 13th fights within Suchet’s corps in Aragon, Valencia and Catalonia until 1814 when returns to France.
